Opening of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020

Today the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 will officially open – one year later than originally scheduled due to the global COVID-19 pandemic.

ASOIF President Francesco Ricci Bitti said on this occasion: “With the particular context of Tokyo 2020 and the challenging postponement, ASOIF and its member federations’ involvement in making the Games happen has never been greater. We are absolutely committed to the safe and successful delivery of the Olympics. ASOIF has a small team on-site to support the smooth running of the sports operations, in close collaboration with the International Olympic Committee, the Tokyo 2020 organisers and the International Federations.”

Between 23 July and 8 August, 11,090 athletes will compete in 33 sports at 42 venues, comprising 339 medal events, thereof 18 mixed/open events. The athletes come from 205 National Olympic Committees and the IOC Refugee Olympic Team. Gender balance has practically been attained with 48.8 per cent female participation. Tokyo 2020 will also feature five new sports which are baseball/softball, karate, skateboard, sports climbing and surfing.

During the Games, ASOIF’s member federations are responsible for the control and direction of their sports. As part of this they have responsibility for overseeing all technical aspects, including the “field of play” and the application of the rules. They also provide the experts needed for running the competitions, such as the Technical Officials and judges.
